Rural Property
The Platform Children’s Society wholly owns its headquarters, a delightful rural property at Kantakapalli, 30km from the bustling city of Visakhapatnam. Constructed on the land is a simple home (nicknamed “Charminar” by the children). This serves as a kitchen and accommodates two staff members, kindly mature ladies who cook, clean, supervise laundry and administer medicine as required. Sick children needing a watchful eye sleep here.
On 30 September 2004 Platform Children’s Society opened a substantial new building comprising a large schoolroom, storeroom and office. Twenty-one boys, studying all grades from Class 2 to 9 are taught by two dedicated, competent teachers. The schoolroom also serves as a venue for concerts, a TV room, a dining hall and sleeping area for our 12 older boys. This proud new building, funded by a generous member, was designed and constructed to accommodate our needs well into the future.
The headquarters’ land area is 62 cents (62% of an acre). It is a reasonably fertile block. We have established fruit trees, flowers and an expansive vegetable garden. Conveniently located overlooking the 62 cents of land is “Taj Mahal”. This property comprises 3 cents of land and a substantial building. It is securely held under a “Memorandum of Understanding” giving us the right to occupy it for as long as we wish, provided it is used for housing children. “Taj Mahal” houses 10 younger boys and AppalaRaju, our Programme Manager.
